I met up with Mandy and Dillon on October 6th for their engagement session in Fernie, British Columbia, and couldn’t have picked a better fall morning to go out exploring with these amazing people.
The two of them actually grew up in neighbouring communities—Fairview and Rycroft—but never met each other until one summer 5 years ago. They went out to a pub in Red Deer with their friends, Robin and Jesse. They played pool together, and Mandy thought he was cute up until he wiped the floor with her playing pool. They didn’t keep in touch after that until about a year later when the same friends invited them to go snowboarding in Banff. Dillon spent most of the day listening to Mandy swearing as she learned!
Then, in July, they went to Invermere to Mandy’s parents’ holiday lot. They invited Dillon’s parents, too, for some boating and golfing, though the boat kept overheating when they went out on Columbia Lake that morning. They were hanging out and floating on the boat with their families, but just before they decided to head back to the campsite, Dillon turned on some music and came to the front of the boat. Mandy asked if he was freaking out, and he said, “You bet I am.” As their parents, relatives and friends looked on, he asked her to marry him.
Fast forward to October, when I was able to meet with these two amazing people for their engagement session. They were so easy to photograph, because they get along with each other so easily. They are genuine, which makes photographing them effortless.
Of course, it helped to have some stunning backgrounds for the session as well. The famous Lizard mountain range behind the two of them made for one of my favourite images of the whole day. The light was dramatic and made for a perfectly moody image.
Dillon & Mandy, thank you for asking me to be your engagement photography. I loved hearing your story and spending the day with you.
